Buyer’s Guide to Knowing When It’s the Right Time to Purchase New Appliances

by Matty ByloosApril 27, 2016

Which Time of Year Is Ideal for Buying New Appliances?

Buying a new appliance is almost as nice as buying a new car. The clean look of it, the innovative new features, and of course, the energy savings all add up to make updating your tired old appliances one of homeownership’s more rewarding experiences.

But just because you want to update your appliances doesn’t mean that now is the right time to do so. This guide will help you find out when it’s the right time to purchase new appliances for your home.

Want the Latest Models or a Great Bargain? Wait to Buy Until September or October

Every year at the start of the fall, typically around September or October, appliance manufacturers introduce their latest models to the market, with the exception of refrigerators. So, if you want to be the first on your block to have the newest washer and dryer, then this is the time of year to do your shopping. Alternatively, this is also a great time to pick up last year’s model at a reduced price. This can be great timing if you’re more concerned about budget over keeping up with the Joneses.

For Budget-Conscious Shoppers, It’s All About January

Retailers don’t like carrying inventory over from one year to the next, especially when it comes to last year’s models. So, if you wait a few more months and shop for your new appliances at the start of the year, you’re likely to find the prices slashed even deeper.

Want a New Refrigerator? May Is When the New Models Roll Out

While most new appliance models are introduced in the fall, the lone exception is refrigerators. The latest refrigerator models are brought to the market in May, so if you really want the latest and greatest fridge, then this is when you’ll want to do your shopping.

Best Holidays for Buying Appliances

If you watch any TV at all, then you know that the holidays are a great time to buy anything from a new car to a new dishwasher. But some holidays are better than others when it comes to shopping for cheap appliances. For instance, holidays like Columbus Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day tend to be among the most popular with appliance retailers. Black Friday is another holiday where you can score a high-end appliance at a great price; you just have to be able to get there before your competition!

Shop for Appliances During the Week and at the End of the Month

Appliance sales professionals usually work on commission and their sales are subject to monthly quotas. Therefore, if you wait until the end of the month, then they will be more likely to negotiate the price with you. Yes, just like shopping for a car, you can negotiate the price of a major appliance in most stores, and if you wait till the end of the month you may have more leverage. Additionally, by keeping your appliance shopping restricted to the weekdays, you’ll avoid the crowds and get better service from your salesperson.

Shop for Appliances Online Anytime of Year

The great thing about shopping for appliances online is that you can quickly compare models, features, and prices. And, even though online retailers also follow the annual sale schedules of their brick and mortar counterparts, they tend to run other promotions all throughout the year so you can find a great deal pretty much any time online. Just be sure to keep in mind the price of shipping when ordering, or your “great deal” could wind up costing you more than you thought.

Buy Your New Appliance When You Need It

Unfortunately, your old appliances won’t follow any schedule when it comes to breaking down. They stop working when they stop working, and sometimes, you have no option but to buy a replacement. If your old appliance is costing you on your energy bill, or it has simply stopped working, then do your research and find the retailer with the best price for the model you want. Your new appliance might cost you a little more than if had you waited until January, but when it comes to having a slightly more expensive refrigerator or not having one at all, you’re not really going to mind spending a little more money.
