How to Get Your Deck Ready For Summer

I’m not sure why the idea of cleaning off the deck makes me want to break out into song. Something along the lines of “That Good ‘Ole Summertime.” Maybe it’s because nothing says summer like backyard picnics under the stars, and the smell of grilling hamburgers goes perfectly with the chirping of crickets. We use our back deck all summer long. But before the deck can start to party, it has to get a little refresh and renewing before we can send out the invites. Here are some of my tips to get your back deck party ready.

1. Start by clearing everything off the deck

We have a wood deck and vinyl siding on the exterior of our home, so we start the whole deck refresh with a solid power washing. It’s easier to power wash if we remove all the furniture and rugs and tables and chairs and start with a clean slate. We power wash the deck and the house at the same time and wash away mold, cobwebs, bugs, and places where the paint might be chipping.

2. Repaint where necessary

After we’ve power washed away any chipping paint off of the rails and the deck, it’s time to repaint. We give the railings a fresh coat of paint every year. First, we lightly sand any areas that need it and then use an exterior white latex enamel paint to give a fresh coat to the railings.

Last year, I painted a diamond pattern on the wood deck to add interest. We taped off squares on the deck and then used porch paint in two contrasting gray colors. This year, we are touching up any spaces on the design that need it.

3. Replace rugs and furniture

We also scrubbed down the deck furniture and power washed off the outdoor rugs to get the space ready for summer. I tossed the cushions in the washer to fluff them up and remove any winter debris.

Next, we added outdoor plants in urns and planters that had also been washed and cleaned and fitted with drainage holes to ensure water didn’t collect in the planters.

4. Plan your party

A good deadline is an incentive to finish your deck refresh, so make sure to send out invites with a specific date. Then add the finishing touches that make your porch yours!

Add new pillows, baskets, an armillary sphere, weather vane, or any other accessories to give the deck the feel of an outdoor room.

Now you’re set and now, you and your porch are ready to party.

One last tip, make sure you add “That Good ‘Old Summertime” to your party playlist.
