AC Efficient: Keep Your Home Energy Smart This Summer

Making Sure Your Home Stays Cool

Summer is upon us, and if early indicators are anything to pay attention to, it’s going to be a scorcher. Hyperbole aside, if you’re tired of putting your feet in a cool tub, running a fan behind a bowl of rapidly melting ice cubes, or wearing a wet handkerchief around your neck to stay cool, then you’re reading the right article, especially if you have been doing all of those things to avoid using your air conditioner for fear of blowing your power bill. Relax. No one is going to judge you (except maybe out of envy) for having a cool enough living space to, well… live in. Furthermore, contemporary air conditioning units aren’t the clunky, fuse-blowing, Freon-chugging behemoths that you may have grown up with. These days, you can live a sustainable lifestyle and stay cool in the summer months. Mind the following tips, and you can make your AC efficient and energy-smart this summer.

Air Conditioning Maintenance

For starters, keep up with your AC maintenance schedule. Like all appliances, air conditioners work best when they are well maintained and clean. Pay special attention to cleaning your AC if you live in an area prone to high humidity and mold growth. The last thing you want is your AC spreading mold spores throughout your home.

Be a Star

If you haven’t purchased an air conditioner yet or are considering replacing an existing AC unit, make sure that you shop for energy efficient appliances first. While you may end up spending more initially on an Energy Star rated air conditioner, the money you’ll save on your electricity bills over that first summer alone will often make up for the extra purchase price.

AC + Fan = Energy Savings

The fact that you caved in and bought an air conditioner doesn’t make your fans obsolete. In fact, an oscillating fan or a ceiling fan can do a lot to help lower the cost of running your AC. Having a fan blowing allows for greater circulation of the cool air that your air conditioner is pumping out.

Additionally, thanks to the nature of convection, moving air actually cools better than stagnant air. All this adds up to you feeling just as cool without having to set your AC thermostat quite so low.

Green AC Is Possible

While the purists may grumble that there is no such thing as green AC as they move their bedroom into the spider-infested basement for the summer, you will know that you’ve taken the steps necessary to make sure that your air conditioner is drawing as little energy from the grid as possible. Your AC unit is energy efficient, star-rated, well-maintained, and supported with the use of fans. Stay cool this summer!
