Once you’ve chosen a space for your new brunch nook, it’s time to plan the building process. You’ll want to think about the functionality you want from this new addition to your home. Below are the main points you’ll need to consider.

Creating a Mood

Think about why you want a new space in your home in the first place. Likely, it’s because you want an attractive space to feed and entertain guests. Maybe you want a quiet, pleasant area to drink your coffee and wake up in the mornings. Think about when you’ll get the most use out of your new brunch nook and design it accordingly.

Maybe you want an old-fashioned, rustic feel. In that case, you should look into natural wood furnishings, from the table and chairs to wood wine racks. If you want a more modern look, you might choose metal or acrylic furnishings, painted in bold colors. Think about what mood you want your space to convey and then choose furnishings accordingly.

What to Buy vs. What to Make

Once you’ve decided the style of your furnishings, you can decide how much you want to DIY this project. If you decide to build some built-in shelves or benches, you may want to consult a contractor. Of course, if you’re adding or removing walls or doing other structural work, a contractor will definitely be necessary, and can help you with any required permits your project may need. However, if you’re simply re-purposing an existing space, there are lots of great resources online for building furniture and adding architectural details to your home.

Making tables and chairs can be a great project, but make sure you have all the tools and knowledge necessary to make sturdy, level furnishings. If you’re looking for some guidance, you can always get DIY wine rack kits, and other premade or partially assembled items. You can also buy premade items but add your own touch with a nice coat of paint or stain.

Maximizing Storage Space

If you’re building a brunch nook because you want to entertain more, chances are you’ll be adding some items to your home. You’ll also likely want to keep dishes and utensils nearby. If you’re doubling this nook area as a workspace, you’ll want easy places to tuck away any paperwork or supplies you use when not entertaining.

There are lots of fun ways to maximize storage space. As mentioned in the first post of this series, built-in benches offer a great opportunity for storage. You can also get hollow ottomans to use as seating, which can hold blankets and other non-fragile items. As for the utensils, mason jar shelves are all the rage right now, and could fit with either a rustic or modern theme

These are just some ideas for making the most of your new brunch nook! For the third post in this series, we will talk about wine pairings based on where you live! Be sure to share your experience in the comments AND enter your information below to win your very own wine rack!
