Manhattan was well inhabited by the Lanape Native Americans long before the colonial period. Dutch colonists founded the city of Manhattan in 1625 as Fort Amsterdam, a citadel at the southern end of the island, built to protect new arrivals. The city of New Amsterdam changed hands as it grew through the seventeenth century and was finally traded to the British in 1674, in exchange for an island in Indonesia. During the American Revolution, the city (now known as New York), served as headquarters for the British war effort after it was lost by the colonists in the early days of the war. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the city continued to grow and remained a chief portal of entry for the United States for immigrants fleeing poverty and religious persecution in Europe and other parts of the world.
