Manhattan is the most densely populated of the five boroughs that make up the city of New York, and it's mostly made up of the Island of Manhattan, which is bordered by three rivers: the East River, the Hudson River, and the Harlem River. It is one of the world's major centers of culture, commerce, and finance. As of 2014, Manhattan's population was over 1.6 million, making it the largest of the five boroughs of New York and putting it in the top ten most populous cities in the U.S. Manhattan is generally thought of as being made up of five areas, each with its own distinct mix of residents, restaurants, retail, cultural landmarks, and architecture. Whether you decide to seek out a new home or rental on the Upper East Side, the Lower East Side, the Upper West Side, in Gramercy Park or Murray Hill, or Greenwich Village or Soho, you're sure to find something fantastic.

Manhattan was well inhabited by the Lanape Native Americans long before the colonial period. Dutch colonists founded the city of Manhattan in 1625 as Fort Amsterdam, a citadel at the southern end of the island, built to protect new arrivals. The city of New Amsterdam changed hands as it grew through the seventeenth century and was finally traded to the British in 1674, in exchange for an island in Indonesia. During the American Revolution, the city (now known as New York), served as headquarters for the British war effort after it was lost by the colonists in the early days of the war. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the city continued to grow and remained a chief portal of entry for the United States for immigrants fleeing poverty and religious persecution in Europe and other parts of the world.
