Although Avondale has been labeled by some as a suburb of Phoenix, the city itself continues to maintain its own identity. The West Valley View newspaper, published twice weekly since 1986 is still independent and headquartered in Avondale. This local periodical keeps neighbors informed about what's going on with local residents, schools and community developments. Library programs and special events are arranged for children, teens and adults. The city partners with local community centers and educators to offer classes in such subjects as art, fitness, writing, music and dance. Soccer, baseball, softball and basketball leagues maintain full schedules here. Active adult programs are provided to keep citizens 60 years of age and older active, healthy and with a purpose.
