The city houses around 17,000 residents, including the population of the unincorporated community of Vansville. Just seven miles north of Maryland's border with Washington, D.C., Beltsville is convenient to both the nation's capital as well as major areas of Maryland. Historically, 80,000 acres of the Beltsville area was given to a plantation farmer by an English lord. Farming and industry were the two staples of historic Beltsville, and many of the older, preserved buildings that still stand there today are from that era of blacksmithing and iron production. The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission has identified at least ten historical sites in Beltsville that remain today to honor its heritage.
