Bend can be found on the eastern edge of the Cascade Range, comfortably nestled along the Deschutes River. The Ponderosa Pine forest transitions in this area into a high desert with arid land, junipers, and sagebrush. The settlement of Bend began in the early 1900s and the city itself was incorporated in 1905. The town was originally a center for logging industry, but today is home to a wider range of economic activities and opportunities for residents. Inside the city limits is Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint as well as the Horse Lava Tube System, remnants of volcanic activity in the region. South of Bend is the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, a highlight for many tourists flocking to the area.
