The township was first founded in 1692 and is nearly as old as Pennsylvania, which was founded in 1682. The area borders Philadelphia, and the area is largely influenced by the culture of its neighboring city. Bensalem has been historically recognized for its strong Jewish community, and the Bensalem Jewish Outreach Center offers a number of services including an outreach center, the Joseph and Martha Melohn Bucks County Mikvah, The Bucks County Hebrew School, The Bensalem Community Kollel, The Neshaminy Valley Eruv Corporation, the Congreration Kehillas B'nai Shalom, the Torah Learning Center Bensalem Preschool and the Zichron Yeshayahu Elbogen Bais Medrash. The township is also home to Mongkoltepmunee Buddhist Temple, an exact replica of the temple in Bangkok. It is the only one in the United States and is a location for a number of ceremonies and frequent meditation. The city is home to a diverse population and houses a number of additional community gathering places.
