Bethlehem, which was named after its biblical counterpart, has a humid continental climate, with average winter temperatures around 20 degrees and summer temperatures around 82. The city grew exponentially during the industrial revolution. Bethlehem Steel was a major contributor to the war efforts during World War I and World War II. Bethlehem Steel closed in 1995, and in 2009 the site was reopened as Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem as a way to revitalize the economy. Bethlehem's revitalization efforts are extending beyond the casino, and the city has a crime rate well below the national average. Lehigh University is just one of Bethlehem's three higher education institutes, and it's ranked as number 35 of America's best colleges by U.S. News and World Report.
