Birmingham is one of the youngest cities in the American South. It was founded during the reconstruction period following the Civil War by merging three small farming communities into one city, back in 1871. The metropolitan area continued to grow by annexing adjacent farm towns, building its status as a railroad transport hub and center for steel and iron production. The city is made up of nine council districts that are divided into twenty-three distinct communities, each of which is composed of various neighborhoods. Communities of note in the Birmingham metropolitan area include Ensley, a formerly independent industrial town that's now a part of the city; Northside Birmingham, which contains Collegeville, the home of the civil rights landmark Bethel Baptist Church; and Red Mountain, the former home of the Sloss Mines, which provided Birmingham with raw material for its steel and iron industry. While the city is not home to any major professional sports teams, local fans can cheer on a minor league baseball franchise or a USFL indoor football team. Additionally, the city is the current home of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, the Southeastern Conference, and the Gulf South Conference, making it a great place for fans to witness college football history in any given year, as the city plays host to a great many bowl games.
