Burlington is a part of Alamance Country, which was created in 1849 due to a need for the North Carolina Railroad to repair and perform maintenance on its track. Transportation was the reason for the city's creation, and thus it remains a significant part of life there today. The city is ideally located between two major North Carolina International Airports, Piedmont Triad in Greensboro, and Raleigh-Durham in Morrisville. Burlington is also a short distance from Elon University, the private liberal arts school founded in 1889. Visitors and residents of Burlington enjoy its rich cultural characteristics. The city is reported to have the most restaurants per capita in the entire state. In fact, Burlington was ranked 29th overall in cities with the best restaurant growth index. Some of the locals enjoy establishments such as La Fiesta, Blue Ribbon Dinner, and Zack's Hotdogs. Other places of interest include convenient grocery stores, shopping malls, and coffee shops.
