One of the areas major employers is the Carlisle Barracks, which is one of the older installations constructed by the U.S. Army. It is home to the U.S. Army War College, which is a school that trains civilians together with senior military personnel for strategic leadership positions. It also maintains the U.S. Army Military Heritage Museum, which is an important area educational landmark. Dickinson College, established in the 1780's, was the first college to come into being in what had just become the United States. To this day, it continues to provide stellar education, as well as functions as an area employer. Neighboring Dickinson School of Law, originally affiliated with Dickinson College, is currently affiliated with Penn State and is the oldest law school in Pennsylvania. Carlisle residents have a good public school system, in addition to several private and parochial schools.

Numbering about 20,000 residents, Carlisle is a borough about 20 miles from Harrisburg, located in the center of the Cumberland Valley.
