Deland, Florida, is a city in Central Florida, north of Orlando and west of Daytona Beach. It has a population of 27,000 and is the county seat of Volusia County. The city has an area of nearly 18 square miles and two prominent historic districts. The Downtown DeLand Historic District is home to notable 19th century buildings along its main street, Woodland Boulevard. The Garden District is a mixed-use neighborhood with restored and rebuilt homes and businesses. The city has a small town feel with tree-shaded streets and attractive single family residences.

Deland is very much a college town, with three universities bringing in students. There are private and public schools from elementary through high school levels. People of this town enjoy their sports, especially the Stetson University basketball and baseball teams. The Spec Martin Stadium, a 6,000-seat football stadium, hosts games for the local high school and for Stetson University. The university's presence provides the town with cultural offerings such as theater, music recitals, museums, and visiting speakers. For recreation, Deland has earned itself a reputation as being the so-called skydiving capital of the world and many skydiving-related industries are based here. Nearby parks offer a variety of activities such as picnicking, swimming, camping, canoeing, and scuba diving. Manatee watching and boating are also popular pastimes.
