DeSoto, as with many cities in southern states like Texas, has a long and exciting history of establishment. The area was first settled in 1847, which makes it one of the oldest communities around in North Texas. The first post office was set up in 1881, and by 1885 DeSoto was home to a cotton gin, a general store, and 120 people. Now, Desoto is the largest and most diverse city in southwest Dallas County, having outgrown over the years its modest beginnings. In 2006 the National Civic League gave DeSoto the All-America City Award, which is the nation's oldest community recognition program award. The city was recognized as a community in which citizens work together to both identify and tackle community-wide challenges to achieve uniquely successful results, including a statue representative of city pride and unity.
