The Dunwoody area was originally pioneered as long ago as the 1830s by Major Charles Dunwody. The Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church, which stands at the corner of Roberts Drive and Spalding Drive, dates back to those years and today is still active as a functional building and a church. It is also home to one of the city's oldest cemeteries. The city is rife with historical charm such as this. The first public school was in continuous operation from 1911 to 1986, and on that same site the Dunwoody branch of the Dekalb County Public Library and the North Dekalb Cultural Arts Center now operate. The Roswell Railroad, opened in 1881, ran along the Chamblee-Dunwoody Road to the Chatahoochee River for 40 years, during which President Theodore Roosevelt himself would make a campaign visit to Dunwoody.
