At the south end of the San Juan National Forest, amid the beauty of the Rocky Mountains, lies the town of Durango, Colorado. Many of the homes in this municipality are clustered along the highway 550 corridor, which is bordered on each side by rising peaks. Durango is well known for its mining history, as well as its proximity to world class skiing and stunning wilderness areas. Outdoor recreation is at the heart of life in this mountain town, so much so that there is a ski area, Chapman Hill, nestled between the Fort Lewis College campus and downtown. Other major resorts, such as Purgatory, can be accessed by a short drive north on highway 550. Popular winter sports including, snowshoeing, ice climbing and snowmobiling are all enjoyed in the surrounding backcountry. Town offers a historic district with quaint shops, bars with local brew on tap and eateries, which bustle with locals and tourists alike.
Durango is near eight national parks and monuments, which can be explored in summer and winter alike. Mesa Verde, Hovenweep and Four Corners all offer insight into the history and settling of the area by both natives and miners. In town, there are a variety of museums and cultural centers, including the Southern Ute Cultural Center and Animas Museum, which opens a window into history through true Wild-West stories and other exhibits. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has run continuously since 1882, it's line snaking alongside the Animas River in the center of the city. Visitors and residents can enjoy a scenic ride beginning in town and ending 47 miles to the north in Silverton. Durango stands out among other mountain west towns as a friendly, charming community with beautiful neighborhoods and breathtaking scenery.
