Settled in the 1600s by Puritan immigrants, East Haven developed from the center outward, although what is referred to by residents as "The Center," is not geographically the middle of town, but rather the location of the core of the administrative facilities. The town beach, on the southern boundary of the city, is a popular destination for swimming, with its sandy shore and lifeguards on duty. A cluster of nearby restaurants offers menus as diverse as the heritage of the residents. The nearby Shoreline Greenway Trail offers biking and walking access for 25 miles along the Long Island Sound.
East Haven is also home to the Lake Saltonstall Recreation Area, which has miles of trails for jogging walking and cycling. It is a popular destination for wildlife viewing and local bird species abound. In the fall, when the leaves change colors, the view is stunning. The city is home to several municipal parks, which span over 130 acres and offer ball fields, playgrounds and other amenities. East Haven is conveniently located just a few miles from several larger cities, which can be accessed by vehicle or public transit. New Haven, Hartford and New York City are all close enough for a day trip and offer some of the best academic, theatrical and shopping experiences in the nation. With it's convenient location, affordable housing, and beautiful scenery, East Haven has much to offer anyone considering making Connecticut their home.
