The town received its name from the Dutch Explorer, Cornelius Jacobsen May. When he found the area, the river was covered with shorebird and waterfowl eggs, so he called in Egg Harbor. Today the region is a major transportation hub for New Jersey residents. A large portion of the Atlantic City Airport is located in the township. There are also nearly 300 miles of roadways throughout the area. Some of the major routes include the Atlantic City Expressway, US Route 9, CR 559, CR 563, CR 575, and CR 585.
