El Cajon resides in the valley of San Diego County, and it is surrounded by mountains. It is often referred to as "The Big Box." This is because the valley boxes in the city. Since the city is further from the coast than other locations in the county, the temperatures can get hotter during the summer. El Cajon also experiences cooler winters. The area was originally home to Spanish residents. During the Mexican-American War, the land grant for the area was acquired by the United States. In 1912, the city was incorporated. Today it is home to a variety of individuals including Whites, Blacks, Asians, Filipinos, and Chinese. Several households in the area have children living with them, and there is a good portion of retired citizens.
