Eugene was initially founded as a trading post by Eugene Franklin Skinner at the southern end of the north-running Williamette River in the mid-eighteen forties. The settlement was initially known as Skinner's Mudhole, then Eugene City, and finally incorporated as the city of Eugene in 1862. The settlement grew from a trading post into a major processor of wood and wood products throughout the late nineteenth and early mid-twentieth centuries. Later, the University of Oregon was established in 1876 and has since grown in stature and attendance along with the population of the surrounding metropolitan area. These days, the largest employers in the region include PeaceHealth Medical Group; the county, city, state, and federal governments; the two area school districts; the University of Oregon; Lane Community College; and Walmart. The area has also become known for its long-standing status as a climate for economic innovation. Nike, Taco Time, and Broderbund Software, among various other international businesses, were all founded in Eugene, and the area continues to be a hot bed for innovation in natural food and other natural and organic products. In terms of its cultural history, Eugene also boasts a large alternative culture and many original hippies and hippie institutions of note.
