The colorful neighborhoods of Eugene include the Ferry Street Bridge Area, the Friendly Area Neighborhood and the Whiteaker neighborhood. The Ferry Street Bridge Area is near downtown and encompasses the district just north of the Willamette River. The city's largest riverfront park and a popular destination for runners, Alton Baker Park, is located in this neighborhood. The Friendly Area Neighborhood is named after a former mayor of Eugene, Sam Friendly, and boasts an abundance of locally-owned small businesses, as well as tree-lined streets and residents' private gardens. Whiteaker, sometimes called "The Whit," is named after the first governor of Oregon, James Whiteaker. It is also situated along the river, northwest of downtown. Although it is primarily a residential area, it is known as a hub of arts and activism.
