Homes in Gatlinburg consist of apartments, condos, townhomes, and single-family residences. In the historic neighborhoods of Greenbrier and Elkmont, which are primarily rental properties, many of the residences were built in the early nineteenth century. In the neighborhoods of Shady Grove and Glade, there are newer homes from the early twentieth century as well as the late 1970s. While property taxes in this area are low (and there is no state income tax at all), sales taxes are higher to make up the difference, due in part to the local tourism industry.
