Great Falls was founded in 1883 after businessman Paris Gibson visited the area to see the Great Falls of the Missouri River. Gibson envisioned a major metropolitan city built near the Falls that could be powered by hydroelectricity. Today, the city of Great Falls has a bustling economy and a diverse population, in part due to it being the home to Malmstrom Air Force Base and the 341st Missile Wing. A wide array of jobs can be found in the healthcare, retail, construction, and service fields. With an outstanding public school system and several colleges and universities in the area, like the University of Great Falls, Great Falls College Montana State University, and others, the city offers a complete educational program for students. Public transportation is readily available in Great Falls, thanks to the Great Falls Transit District. The GFTI offers several bus routes designed to meet the needs of Great Falls' residents.
