As of the 2010 census, the city of Gulfport was reported to have a total population of around 68,000 people. It is co-county seat with Biloxi of Harrison County, and is additionally home to the U.S. Navy Atlantic Fleet Seabees. Gulfport has been incorporated since 1898 and was founded by William H. Hardy and Joseph T. Jones. The harbor in Gulfport was dredged to open the shipping channel to the sea and in 1902, with the harbor completed, the Port of Gulfport became a functioning seaport that accrues millions of dollars in annual sales and tax revenue for Mississippi state. In 1910 the U.S. Post Office was built, which is now on the list of the National Register of Historic Places. Gulfport has also been home to a Carnegie Library since 1916, making it a charming town ripe with historical culture.
