There are several distinctive neighborhoods in Hampton. Aberdeen Gardens is a planned community dating back to 1934. It is a national historic district, with 158 homes and a commercial area, as well as a school. Farmington, in the southwest of Hampton, is a subdivision built on the site of an old plantation. Buckroe, a small beach-front community, has been a recreational destination since the late 1800s. As far back as 1619, it was used as a teaching plantation by the Virginia Company. Fox Hill is a mostly residential neighborhood in the eastern part of the city. Hampton Woods and Michaels Woods are residential subdivisions located in the midwestern area of the city. Northampton, also in the midwestern section of the city, contains many schools and shops, as well as single-family homes and apartment buildings.
