Part of the Killeen Independent School District, the children of Harker Heights, Texas attend one of three elementary schools. Two middle schools and a high school round out the public school system for the area, but several private schools offer education options, too. There are no colleges within the city's limits, but Central Texas College is only 10 miles from Harker Heights, and Baylor University is just 46 miles away. Public transportation is available via The HOP, which makes commuting to work or school much easier. The Harker Heights Loop stops at several area businesses and connects to routes heading out of city limits.

Low crime rates and affordable living makes Harker Heights, Texas popular among the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood Metropolitan Area's families. In fact, nearly 28,000 people call the city's 12.8 square miles home, and with home prices below average at about $174,000, it's easy to see why. Perhaps one of the best features of Harker Heights is its community garden, though, which offers affordable garden plot rentals, so even those living in apartment complexes can grow their own produce.
