Huntington Beach's central road, Beach Blvd., was originally a central cattle route in the 18th and 19th centuries, and was later developed by Henry Huntington, the town's namesake. In the 20th century, the town began to boom when an encyclopedia company provided free parcels of land along with the purchase of a full set of encyclopedias. Oil was soon discovered in the region, and much of the economy was based on oil and agriculture. Today, much of the agriculture has been depleted and the oil dried up. While the economy is still dependent on some on-shore and off-shore drilling, it is now mostly reliant on tourism and a few large corporations, small businesses and some industry.
