Kalamazoo is known for its appreciation of the arts. The city has an arts council; on the first Friday of each month, the council organizes a free event called Art Hop. During this event, the downtown businesses and galleries display the works of local artists. Art enthusiasts move from venue to venue, enjoying art and live music. This also gives art lovers a chance to meet and speak with local artists. The city hosts a giant New Year's Eve event each year. The celebration is centered at Bronson Park and surrounding venues. Patrons can walk from venue to venue, enjoying music, magic shows, comedy and food. The event, which started in 1985, seems to grow in popularity each year; it is capped with a fireworks display. Music fans can take in a show at many of the venues in the city, including the State Theatre and Western Michigan University's Miller Auditorium.
