Originally a small village built around the only spring-fed fresh water within several miles, Las Vegas was the fastest growing city in America from the time that the state of Nevada legalized gambling in 1931, until the housing bubble burst at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It is now number three on the list behind Charlotte, North Carolina and Austin, Texas. The economy is still driven almost entirely by the tourism trade, with casinos and hotels driving bringing in the majority of those tourist dollars, though new attractions have begun to spring up off the strip. Besides the casinos and hotels, construction adds a significant chunk of change to the local economy, as does higher education. The off-strip cultural attractions of the city include the Neon Museum of historic signs, the Las Vegas Natural History Museum and a thriving Downtown Arts District full of galleries, cafes, retail boutiques, and home to the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, which hosts major touring shows from Broadway as well as jazz, dance, opera, ballet, orchestral, and choral performances. The city is home to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, as well as the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing, and Visual Arts, the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, and several other smaller colleges and institutions of higher education.
