The city was first populated as an expansion of Kaysville in the 1850s, but the city was later unincorporated after extensive dispute. The city of Layton, as it is known today, was fully recognized in 1920. At this point, the town experienced subtle growth, but with the arrival of the Hill Air Force Base and World War II, the population rapidly boomed and it became a fully established city by the 1950s. The base continues to be a large employer, but the city also serves as a bedroom community for workers in Salt Lake and Ogden. Today, the city is consistently recognized as a frontrunner in economic development in the region, and the city houses a prominent hospitality district containing more than 1000 hotel beds and a popular conference center. Additionally, the city is home to a number of nationally renowned restaurants and retail stores along with the Layton Hills Mall.
