This city has a rich history as a hub of manufacturing, art, and research. It is known as the cradle of the American Industrial Revolution. In the early 1800s, cotton grown in the south was spun and processed in the mill. The city of Lowell was intended as the manufacturing center for textiles. Today, Lowell is best known for its historic sites, universities, and as the birthplace of writer Jack Kerouac. There are eight separate neighborhoods in Lowell: Belvidere, Downtown, South Lowell, Back Central, the Acre, Pawtucketville, Centralville, and the Highlands. The Highlands is the most highly populated area; almost a quarter of the city resides there. The Pawtucketville neighborhood houses the University of Massachusetts Lowell and was also where Jack Kerouac grew up.
