Martinsburg has a population of 17,227, according to the 2010 United States Census. This adds to its charm. It's not so big that it's hard to get to know and not so small that it doesn't meet everyone's needs. The public school student-teacher ratio of 15.4 is in line with the national average. There are three technical colleges where education continues after high school as well as the University of Charleston-Martinsburg. Martinsburg has a mall anchored by major retailers, and there are five smaller shopping centers and many places to support local specialty stores and gift shops. Martinsburg even has the nation's oldest farmer's market. Residents have enjoyed shopping there since 1778. Annual events, including the Apple Harvest Festival, Chili Cookoff and Chocolate Fest and Book Faire, bring the community and visitors out for fun times together. There are plenty of free samples and a chance to tour a major candy factory at the Chocolate Fest.
