The city of Middletown was incorporated in 1888 and, due to being a stop on certain New York State railroads, it grew in the 19th and 20th centuries by attracting various manufacturing businesses. The surrounding areas are partly set aside for small dairy farms, while the metropolitan centers are dominated by major employers such as Mediacom Communications Corp, Walmart, SUNY Orange, and Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine. Mediacom has its primary headquarters located outside the city in the Town of Wallkill, but Middletown is its main business address. Bell Flavors and Fragrances also has a manufacturing location in Middletown.
