Milwaukee is the largest city in the state of Wisconsin, and one of the largest in the entire Great Lakes region. The city was first established by a French Canadian in 1785 as a trading post where the Milwaukee River meets the Western shore of Lake Michigan. Prior to that, the area was a long-standing meeting place for the various Native American tribes that called the surrounding area home. Through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the city grew and prospered, its growth driven primarily by an influx of German, Scandinavian, and Eastern European immigrants. The city is home to many iconic and historic neighborhoods, with a few such as Whitefish Bay, South Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Cudahy, and Shorewood ranking as some of the oldest and most architecturally beautiful among them. The city is home to the corporate headquarters of Harley-Davidson, Joy Global, Rockwell Automation, Northwestern Mutual, Johnson Controls, and Manpower from the Fortune 500 list, as well as industry leaders like financial data services company Fiserv Inc., and retail giant Kohl's. With that in mind, finding employment in Milwaukee may be much easier than in other parts of the country. Once known as the home of Schlitz, Blatz, Pabst, and Miller, four of the world's largest breweries, the city is only home to Miller Brewing Company and a handful of micro-breweries these days.
