Minneapolis is made up of many distinct neighborhoods. North Loop was once an industrial part of town, but the empty warehouses near the core of downtown have since been repurposed as residential and commercial buildings. A little further from the downtown action to the south, Linden Hills is full of large bungalows and Tudors and boasts proximity to Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet. The Bancroft neighborhood is full of single-family homes from the 1940s, quaint schools and a few commercial sections along Bloomington Avenue. Just south of the downtown area is Elliot Park, which is home to large mansions that have been turned into apartment complexes. Downtown itself is split into two distinct neighborhoods, Downtown East and Downtown West. Downtown East is primarily recreational, industrial and commercial buildings, and Downtown West is the heart of the downtown area with culture, restaurants, shopping, office buildings and corporate headquarters.
