Modesto has a thriving tourism industry thanks to its many attractions and historical sites. The McHenry Mansion was completed in the early 1880s and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours are given on a regular basis and the McHenry Museum is located just across the street. George Lucas immortalized the city in his film American Graffiti, so to honor the filmmaker, the town built a statue in George Lucas Plaza. The bronze sculpture is located at Five Points, which intersects with McHenry Avenue. Downtown Modesto is known for its restaurants, nightlife and monthly Art Walk. Built in the 1920s, the recently renovated State Theatre serves as a local performance spaces and holds viewings of independent and foreign films.
