In 1845, the city was founded by German nobleman Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, for whom it is named. The annual "Wurstfest" fall sausage festival and "Wassailfest" in December pays homage to New Braunfels strong German heritage. There are a number of nice neighborhoods in the area such as Lake Dunlap, Solms/Jentsch Acres, and Northstar Loop/Northpark Ridge. More expensive areas include Landa Park Highlands, Hunter, Comal/Corbyn, Gruene/Thorn Hill and Clear Springs. Lovely homes line the shores of Lake McQueeney. In the middle of the lake, is Treasure Island which features numerous expansive vacation and summer homes. Many locals and visitors alike are drawn to the area's cold-river springs, and tubing is a big activity during the summer on the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers. The Schlitterbahn Water Park is located in New Braunfels and was one of the first ones in the country. Another local attraction is the Ernest Eikel Skate Park.
