New Haven has a long history; the community was founded in 1638 by a group of five hundred English puritans looking to establish a stronger community of faith that was separate from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Prior to the coming of the puritans, the area was occupied by a collection of fishing and maize-farming Quinnipiac villages spread around the harbor that frequently traded in beaver pelts with itinerate Dutch traders. When the puritans arrived, the Quinnipiac sold their land in exchange for protection from the neighboring Pequot tribe. In 1701, local residents established Yale University, which continues to be the area’s largest taxpayer as well as its biggest employer. The local economy has diversified from its original base in manufacturing. Besides the university, the region’s major employers include New Haven Hospital, the Knights of Columbus headquarters, St. Raphael Hospital, Assa Abloy Manufacturing, United Illuminating, Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Higher One, Covidien, Southern Connecticut State University, and Smilow Cancer Hospital. If you’re considering buying a home in or around New Haven, you’ll be happy to note there’s plenty of local culture to make life more than entertaining. Culturally speaking, the New Haven area boasts a reputation for being the best foodie city in the country. Besides a great local restaurant scene, the city is also home to a great many theaters, art galleries, a fantastic collection of museums, including the Eli Whitney Museum, a symphony orchestra, an internationally acclaimed jazz festival, and a variety of minor league and collegiate sports teams.
