The area was first founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1769. By the 19th century, it became a central location for farming and grazing, and Oceanside's downtown was built in 1890. The area has recently been restored and remains a historical landmark. With the arrival of the 20th century, the city became a central location for beach goers, and housing and neighborhoods grew during the 1920s and 1930s. Those original homes with historical value have been maintained, and can be viewed today. Since the founding of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in 1942, the city has continued to grow. Over the following decades, many suburban developments were built to provide affordable housing. Today, the city is known for its value in the housing market, particularly in regard to vacation homes.
