Culture and performing arts are an important aspect of life in Odessa. The Globe of the Great Southwest is a wonderful location for any Shakespeare fan. Part of Odessa College, this authentic replica of Shakespeare's hallowed Globe Theatre hosts the annual Shakespeare festival, as well as many other plays and performances throughout the year. There are many other playhouses and theaters all over the city as well. The Ector Theater was built in 1951 and features classic movies, live performances and concerts to the joy of local residents. There is also the Permian Playhouse, which has delighted the town with many live performances since the 1970s.
