Roughly 10,000 homesteaders founded Oklahoma City in 1889, during The Land Run, when they were allowed to claim the Unassigned Lands in parcels. The town grew rapidly after that, with the population doubling in population in its first decade. Many of the city's historic neighborhoods are laid out in a grid pattern that's divided into North and South districts by the North Canadian River. Initially a hub for the production and distribution of cattle, the city went on to establish itself as a capital of the U.S. energy industry, and a major refiner and distributor of oil and gas. Currently, the area's top employers include the state government, the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center, Integris Health, the city government, the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and the Hobby Lobby chain of craft stores. Other regional economic players include nearby Tinker Air Force Base and the University of Oklahoma. The city was a main stop on U.S. Route 66, and has been featured in many films and songs regarding the famed highway across the states.
