Palm Desert experiences a population surge during the winter months when people travel to the area in search of favorable weather. This is one of the reasons the city has a motto entitled "feel the warmth." Although snowbirds frequent the region, Palm Desert has seen an increase in the number of full-time residents. Many people are relocating to this city because of the cost of living and affordable and high quality homes. The first residential developments began during the 1940s due to the Army camp in the area. This site later became home to "El Paseo," a luxurious shopping center similar to Rodeo Drive.
