The townships name can be traced back to the Lenape Native American sub-tribe, and is a derivation of parsipanong. The area was particularly attractive to Native American tribes due to its rich and diverse animal and plant life, and they settled the land several thousand years ago. The area was later settled by the Europeans in the 18th century, and the township was officially recognized in 1928. Today, the area is a thriving New Jersey community and has been repeatedly recognized. Throughout the last decade, Money Magazine has consistently rated the township as one of the best places to live in the United States. It was most recently ranked at 15, as the magazine specifically cited the towns focus on arts and leisure.
