Originally founded in 1758 and named for the English noble William Pitt, First Earl of Chatham, Pittsburgh is situated where the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River come together to form the Ohio River. Following the War of 1812 and the disappearance of English goods from the American market, the city stepped to the forefront of U.S. industry as a center for the production of the goods that served as the building blocks of the American industrial revolution. The area presently enjoys a diversified post-industrial economy, with the high tech, robotics, biomedical, finance, education, health care, nuclear engineering, and tourism industries leading the way. Pittsburgh is also home to the corporate headquarters of nine Fortune 500 companies, making it the city with the eighth largest amount of such high-profile companies. But, the largest employer in the area is the University of Pittsburgh, which boasts more than 10,000 people among its faculty and staff. The metropolitan area is known as a major hub for higher education, and besides Pitt, the city is also home to Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, and several other nationally and internationally esteemed colleges and institutions of higher education.
