Pontiac is considered a suburb of the Metro Detroit area, and it is a community full of both economic and ethnic diversity, as its industrial past brought newcomers from all around the world to work in the factories that were located in the area. This diverse demographic contributes to the unique and eclectic feel of the area, which is unlike anywhere else. Pontiac has 10 neighborhood areas, which are designated mostly by streets and real estate values. Most of the homes in Pontiac were built in the early 1940s, although some areas have homes from the early to late 1800s. Homes closest to the downtown city center and the nearby areas are the cheapest in the area, but they also are much older, with less square footage and green space. Neighborhoods on the outer edges of Pontiac contain homes that were built mostly within the past 20 years, with more square footage and higher real estate prices than the central areas of Pontiac.
