European immigrants first settled the Reno area in the 1850s; these pioneers farmed the valley of the Truckee River between Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake, for a wide variety of subsistence crops. Early residents also set up shop and eked out a living selling goods to settlers who were traveling the California Trail through the Sierra Nevada Mountains by way of Donner Pass. The discovery of silver at the Comstock Lode in 1859 led to a mining rush, coupled with a massive influx of new immigrants. Today, the Reno area economy has drifted far from its original farming and mining roots. These days, the majority of the city's residents earn their living in the gambling and entertainment industries, and within the education and healthcare sectors of the economy. The region's top employers include the county government, the University of Nevada Reno, the Washoe County School District, International Game Technology, Peppermill Reno, and the Renown Regional Medical Center. The majority of the city's arts and culture does revolve around the venues that are routinely available at the many local casinos. However, the city is also home to the Nevada Museum of Art, the National Automobile Museum, the Nevada Shakespeare Company, and a wide variety of other arts and artistic institutions.
