The area was first claimed in the 1830s when Roswell King established a cotton mill to serve the surrounding cotton plantations. He invited a number of recognized investors and other individuals to join him in the area, and they began to build. Today, many of the first buildings have been preserved, and they are open for public viewing. Through the Civil War and the Great depression, the city experienced a multitude of ups and downs. However, the population has been steadily increasing for the past 15 years and is now one of the states most prominent cities. Tourism is a central part of the economy, and there are a number of historical sites for both tourists and locals to enjoy. These sites include Archibald Smith Plantation Home, Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall, Chattahoochee Nature Center, Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, Faces of War Memorial, Primrose Cottage, Teaching Museum North, Atlanta Rowing Club, Holy Hill and Historic Roswell District. The city is deeply rooted in its rich history.
