Located directly in the center of North Carolina, Sanford is home to nearly 30,000 people and has a small city appeal and feel, with plenty of culture and character. Interestingly, because its geographic location brings both sand and clay to the area, Sanford is known for its brick production. In fact, in 1959, it was named the "Brick Capital of the USA," and produced 10 percent of the country's bricks. Brick suppliers still employ many workers in the area, along with other major workforces like the Central Carolina Hospital and Pfizer. With the county airport only a few miles from the city, transportation is convenient. Many students flock to Sanford to attend Central Carolina Community College or one of the six elementary schools, three middle schools, or three high schools in the city. Private education is also available through the Christian institutions or a Montessori-style school.
